Empowerment, Leadership and Social Media

August 30, 2011

If you want success as a leader in 2011 you need to “brand” yourself using all available channels and therefore also social media such as LinkedIn, Twitter, WordPress and Facebook, thereby influencing how you are regarded in the context of Leadership.

As a Leader I believe in Empowerment and pushing responsibility down in the organization moving the “limelight” away from the leader towards the empowered employee.

There is no doubt in my mind that empowerment has a positive influence on organizational motivation and therefore productivity and results.

However, empowerment will move the focus away from the leader and will naturally dilute her “leadership brand”.

The successful leader is therefore facing a tough challenge finding the right balance between Empowerment and “Self-branding”.

Very interesting and well said. I don’t know if I agree with the symbol you have empowerment and social media in; the yin and yang. I see social media as empowering. As far as the empowered employee I tend to agree with Paul Gillin; that they will better represent the company. I believe it is the leader’s responsibility to brand themselves in a way that does not dilute their leadership image. Is that what we are talking about here? Thought-provoking article.

    • Thank you for stopping by and for your interesting thoughts – and especially for finding it “thought-provoking”!
Let me reflect a bit and get back to you ASAP. 🙂
